183 Sunsets Over Georgian Bay (2023.06.21 – 2023.12.21), Georgian Bay, Ontario, Canada

Inquire About Print

183 Sunsets Over Georgian Bay was made from June 21 to December 21, 2023, from the summer solstice to the winter solstice. The image records 183 sunsets in a single exposure made with a custom-built pinhole camera and light-sensitive black and white photographic paper.

Each arc traces the sun’s daily path across the sky as the season moves toward the shortest day of the year. Breaks in the lines mark periods of cloud cover. The colours come from the paper’s chemical response to extreme overexposure, humidity, and temperature.

Solargraphy turns time into visible structure. The photograph does not describe a single instant. It records weather, season, light, and planetary motion as one accumulated event.

This work appeared on the cover of PhotoED Magazine’s Fall 2024 Time Issue, which also featured an article on my solargraphy process and technique. It was exhibited in Tradition Transformed at the Orillia Museum of Art and History.
