Clonony Castle, a 16th-century tower house in Offaly, Ireland, embodies Ireland’s rich medieval history. Originally built by the MacCoghlan clan, it was later ceded to King Henry VIII and granted to Thomas Boleyn, father of Anne Boleyn, as part of political maneuvers to elevate the Boleyn family’s status. Following Anne’s execution in 1536, her relatives sought refuge in Ireland. Cousins Mary and Elizabeth Boleyn lived and died at the castle. Their burial site was discovered beneath the ancient yew tree on the left in 1803, marked by a limestone slab inscribed with their lineage. Clonony Castle’s weathered stone walls carry the weight of the centuries while preserving the history and stories that have shaped it.

Additional note: As a Second Unit Director and Visual Effects Supervisor on Showtime’s miniseries The Tudors, filmed in Ireland, I had the unique opportunity to engage closely with the history of the Boleyn family and the reign of Henry VIII.
