Event Horizon - Total Solar Eclipse, 2024, Port Maitland, Ontario, Canada

Event Horizon - Total Solar Eclipse, 2024 was made on April 8, 2024, during the total solar eclipse that crossed southern Ontario. Photographed at Port Maitland on Lake Erie, the image records the diamond ring effect as sunlight begins to return at the edge of the moon.

A clear-sky eclipse can produce an extraordinary image, with the sun, moon, and corona held in clean celestial alignment. Here, passing clouds transformed the event into something less resolved and more singular. The moon appears as a near-black disc within a blue-grey veil, surrounded by warm ochre and brown atmospheric forms. The first returning sunlight breaks across its upper edge as a concentrated gold arc.

A total solar eclipse is more than an astronomical event. It is a rare psychological experience that alters one’s sense of time, space, and human scale. As the world plunges into darkness, the vastness of the cosmos becomes real, immediate, and humbling.

The image departs from the familiar clarity of eclipse photography. With the moon rendered as a near-black disc and the surrounding clouds drawn into orbit-like bands of blue-grey, ochre, and brown, the scene suggests something closer to an event horizon than a conventional view of the sun and moon. The title comes from that resemblance, from the sense of light bending around darkness before it returns.
