Cheltenham Badlands, Caledon, Ontario, Canada
All of the elements in this photograph lead to the tree, which despite the starkness
of its surroundings has claimed its place and is determined to endure with dignity.
This photograph was made in the early fall with a 1952 Rolleiflex twin lens reflex
camera.
The Cheltenham Badlands is the best example of badland topography
in Ontario, making it an Area of Natural and Scientific Interest
(ANSI). Around the turn of the 20th century, land clearing
and livestock grazing caused the erosion of the underlying
Queenston shale.
