Film Biography


Bret Culp is an award-winning Visual Effects Supervisor, Producer and Director. He has contributed to nearly 50 feature films, mini-series, and television shows bringing over twenty years of experience to the film and television industry.

After attending the Film and Photography program at Ryerson University in Toronto, Bret quickly worked his way to Senior Artist and Designer at several top Toronto production companies. He helped design and create award winning commercials, broadcast design, and title sequences for Coca-Cola, The Discovery Channel, and the TekWar television movies, to name a few.

In 1993, Bret was selected to create the opening titles for William Shatner's made for television movies based on his science fiction Tek novels. The sequence won the 1994 International Broadcast Association Award for Best Show Opening, as well as being nominated for the 1994 Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Individual Achievement in Graphic Design and Title Sequences.

In 1994, when William Shatner and partners were forming C.O.R.E. Digital Pictures they asked Bret to join them to head up the visual effects division and help make the Toronto based company a world class creator of visual effects. In 15 years they successfully built four divisions having created visual effects for over 100 films and television movies.

As a Visual Effects Supervisor, Bret has directed his teams to create awe-inspiring visual effects on projects such as TriStar Pictures Silent Hill, Constantin's Resident Evil: Apocalypse, Lions Gate Films Saw II, Paramount Pictures Against the Ropes, and Mixamax/Pandora's Cypher, for which he won a International Fantasy Film Award for Best Visual Effects, IMAX:Hubble 3D, and the epic Starz/GK Films mini-series Camelot. Bret was second unit director and Visual Effects Supervisor on Showtime's hit miniseriesThe Tudors, for which he received two Best Visual Effects Gemini Awards and two more nominations over the four-year run of the show.

Bret is a Visual Effects Supervisor and Producer at Toronto based Arc Productions, one of the top animation and visual effects studios in the world.  He is also an acclaimed art photographer and author of the book, The Beauty of Impermanence.
